“The Old Beggar” has an eerie mood. The accompaniment consists solely of a repeating open fifth on C-sharp and G-sharp. Because of the stoic nature of the left hand, the melody becomes even more important. Students may struggle with the numerous ties and varied rhythms. They will encounter sixteenth notes, thirty-second notes, and triplets. The tempo and rhythms need to be steady and exact. Dynamics are quite important, and students may consider using the una corda pedal in the final measures to change the sound.
