As suggested by the title, this piece wanders through many keys. Pentachords in major and minor keys and various other modes compose the melodic and harmonic material. Students will have opportunity to practice reading constantly changing accidentals. The rhythms and the coordination of playing in a canonic style in this piece can be challenging. Strategically placed rests create pauses adding to the quirkiness of “Wandering.” Even slight changes in dynamics are carefully marked. Students should be sure to observe them to capture one of this piece’s crucial elements.
