Bartók creates his own mode in this piece; students should be aware of the key signature, which has just a C-sharp. As the title suggests, the melody is of primary interest in this piece. One should carefully choose a dynamic level for the accompaniment that does not overpower the right hand. Practicing hands alone can help with the balance and also to make sure that both hands are truly legato. Phrasing should be based mostly on the melodic line with avoidance of being choppy.
