Bela bartok 2

Though the title refers to having four separate voices, the soprano line remains the most prominent voice. The piece has a hymn-like sound, and the melody should be played as legato and cantabile as possible. Since it is written in the mixolydian mode, students may not initially be familiar with the harmonies. The absence of the leading tone, however, serves to increase the simplicity and ease of the mood. Students should make sure to keep a steady, peaceful tempo. A tricky passage with numerous ties and movement in all four voices increases the difficulty of the piece.
