Creating a convincing atmosphere is a large part of playing “Morning Prayer.” This can be done effectively through dynamics, touch, and timing. The overall dynamic should remain gentle helping students to produce a warm sound without becoming harsh. Although sometimes difficult in quieter dynamic levels, clear voicing is essential so that the melody can be heard. Timing also is crucial. Students should not hurry through phrases but enjoy the peaks followed by gentle relaxations at cadences. Careful counting will keep the final measures from sounding stagnant.
