Though it appears as if it is a simple piece, “Festival Time” has numerous technical challenges. First, the left hand thumb must sustain whole notes while the other fingers play quarter notes underneath. The right hand melody above this has fast triplets that must be even and clear. Second, articulation can be difficult. Students encounter legato, staccato, and tenuto markings. Third, the final measures have hand-crossing arpeggios in which it is hard to arrive at the new positions fast enough. This piece introduces the flat VI chord, which can be an interesting theory discussion.
