Sound quality is important in “Pensive.” The tone should never be harsh, remaining gentle and warm throughout the performance. This is a great chance to practice playing legato without much help from the pedal. Dynamics also add a lot to the peaceful mood. Keveren ends the piece with a pianissimo dynamic level, challenging young pianists to play softly without sacrificing tone quality. The rhythms are quite simple, making them easier for beginning musicians.
