This is a great prelude for students to experience the joy of rich harmonic progressions. Though written in E minor, there are brief moments in E major. Harmonic analysis is possible for students since the chords are quite standard and simple. Dynamics play a large part in creating a slow build up to a climax two-thirds of the way through. Because the left hand consists of broken octaves, students who can reach a large span will have an easier time. To create a long melodic line, students should be deliberate which notes to bring out in the right hands. The thirds should be well voiced. A gentle rubato enhances this piece.
