Chromaticism, shifting tonal centers, and variation of melody between hands may challenge students who wish to play this highly interesting piece. “Nicht Schnell,” meaning “not fast,” indicates not only the slower tempo, but also the sleepy character of the piece. Students should also be aware of changing clef signs and markings such as rests that demarcate two voices in one hand.
