Timothy Brown, The Deserted Castle

Timothy Brown

"Follow the solemn melody as it flows between the hands and keep the accompanimnet swaying quietly underneath.  The middle section should be played as a hymn." (Timothy Brown, reproduced here with permission of the author.)

This piece is reminiscent of Mussorgsky's "Il Vecchio Castello" from "Pictures at an Exhibition", with its drone-like accompaniment and slow dotted rhythms in the melody.  The open fifths also harken back to a medieval castle. Students need to be very precise with the rhythmic nuances.
